People Whose Minds are Turning Me On

Okay, so grad school is lots of reading. And discovering. I am discovering more people whose ideas I want to explore. And I really need more time for that. So I don't forget, I'm posting them here. If you have more to suggest, please do so. My mind is greedy for these expansive additions...

David Bohm
Fritjof Capra
Danah Zohar
Margaret Wheatley
Ervin Lazlo
Patricia Shaw
Myron J. Frankman
Joanna Macy
William Isaacs

I know there are more, but this is a start.

Yes, I am voting for Obama

I ended up watching the Frontine program on Obama/McCain as it came on just as I was heading upstairs to my room. (The roommate had the tv in the living room on, otherwise I would have missed it.) It provided interesting political and biographical history, though I wish it had been a bit meatier on their actual policy work. Not that it would have changed my mind, but what I picked up on each candidate's underlying motivation and style reinforced my preference for Obama.

Obama, working as a community organizer on the south side of Chicago, became frustrated with the amount of change he could effect from that level, and chose to get into politics to be able to make a bigger difference.

McCain, due to the physical limitations caused by his plane crash and treatment as a POW, was assigned to escort politicians for his military duty. Quickly becoming friends with some of the younger politicians, he soon realized this was something he could do, too.

Obama's transcendence of difference and polarization have been a consistent theme in his life. When he was voted in as president of the Harvard Law Review, during a difficult time on campus, a conservative student, who basically disagreed with all of Obama's positions, threw his support behind Obama because he felt he would be the best leader.

While he has much more history to contend with, McCain seems to have a tendency to allow expediency to win out when it benefits his political position, even if it doesn't sit well with him. For example, initially he came down harshly against torture (understandable given his history). But when positioning himself as a Republican Presidential Candidate, he backpeddaled, gaining him support from the Bush administration.

You are certainly entitled to your own opinions. Mine is that Obama will bring vision and leadership that will support the transformation we must undertake in order to survive and thrive.

Lightly roll the pieces of goose in the mixture. Brown the goose and onions in 3 tablespoons of the fat. Add the water and bay leaf. Cover and cook over low heat 2 1/2 hours, or until the goose is tender.

Strawberries

The strawberries in my backyard are incredibly sweet. At least the ones that I force myself to wait until they are fully ripe to pick. I just took plain yogurt blended with backyard strawberries, a little vanilla and milk for a lovely afternoon beverage. Yummy.

Foo Figher Tickets

My brother is selling two floor tickets to Foo Fighters in Seattle on July 9. He's asking $170 for the pair. Evidently they can't go now.

If you - or someone you know - would be interested, let me know and I'll put you in touch.

5 for 3

I have worked more than 215 hours so far this month. That's nearly five and a half weeks of full time hours squeezed into three. I turned down work for Saturday, and still have four days scheduled before the end of the month.

If I miss making snarky comments on your LJ, please understand.

Shameless Retreat Plug

I have been remiss in my duties of shamelessly plugging our annual Yoga Retreat. Truthfully, it is a wonderful trip with amazing people in a magical place. We have a few spots left. There's room for about 5 more people. We keep it limited, so it's a pretty intimate experience, rather than being lost in a large class.

All levels of experience are welcome. We have three teachers with a variety of styles so you can choose what works best for you. Come to all the classes, or just the ones you want to experience. There's also the opportunity to explore an authentic Mexican town (this is not USA in MX), visit Mayan ruins, explore the mangroves and maybe see some wild Tapirs, or just lie on the dock and swim in the beautiful lake.

Here's the info:

Bringing many years of experience in Atma Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, DansKinetics, Meditation, Pranayama (breathwork), and Kirtan (yoga chanting), Coleen Elwood, Tara Cindy Sherman, and Margie Weaver invite you to journey deeper into the heart of your yoga practice. On the shores of Laguna Bacalar at beautiful Rancho Encantado, you will have the opportunity to dive into two daily classes, plus evening Kirtan and experience a traditional Sweat Lodge Ceremony. In your free time, rest and rejuvenate in the magic of the lake, the warmth of the sun, and the rich history of the land. Melt away the winter blues and revitalize your life and your practice. Reiki and other spa treatments available at additional cost. 20% discount on spa treatments booked in advance.

Package Prices:

  • Single Occupancy - Garden Casita: $2000, Laguna Casita: $2200
  • Double Occupancy - Garden Casita: $1425, Laguna Casita: $1550
  • Triple Occupancy - Garden Casita: $1395, Laguna Casita: $1510
  • Companions Not Taking Yoga - Garden Double: $700, Laguna Double: $825

Conflict of Interests

So, I haven't decided on a candidate for the Presidential race yet. No doubt, in the final race I'm most likely to support the Democratic Candidate. According to  http://glassbooth.org/ , my views most closely match Kucinich, Richardson and Gravel.

Now here's the conflict. I have the opportunity to possibly work on the Clinton Campaign, however it seems they are waiting to see how things go in some of the primary races before committing to hiring my contact. So, for work opportunities, I want Clinton to do well.

Personally, my integrity is of utmost importance to me. So here I sit, worrying that my personal work interests will influence who I choose to support in the primary. I guess the only solution is to really educate myself on all the candidates. Then take the time to reflect on who I feel is best for the job over the next four years.

Deciding to support someone based on electability can be a slippery slope of expediency. While I completely disagree with most of their views, I have seen a loss of integrity in the Moral Majority this year as various leaders of this demographic have chosen to support candidates they believe electable, rather than those who represent their opinions. While I disagree with Huckabee on many issues, listening to him speak on health care made me think "Huh, I can actually agree with a Republican on some things."

Lives are full and busy, and I know I've been guilty of not taking the time to really educate myself on the candidates in the past. Information that gets handed to us is often pablum and meaningless, and it can be hard to find substantive information. This year, I'm committing myself to really looking at the field of candidates, and choosing the one I think is best for the job.

What will you do?

Thankgiving Feast (for one)

After volunteering for the Run for the Hungry this morning, I made my own Thanksgiving Feast.

Fresh Rolls from the Panderia (bought this am)
Steamed Brussels Sprouts
Sweet Potato Crab Bisque
Rice Pudding

Sweet Potato Crab Bisque:
Saute some onion, then add diced, peeled Garnet Yams (okay, so not technically sweet potatoes). Cover with veggie stock. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 25 min. Add spices (chili powder & creole) and chopped fresh cilantro. Puree the soup, return to pot, add 2% milk & crab meat (cooked or fake). Heat through. Nummy.

Rice Pudding:
Combine 1 Cup rice with two quarts 2% milk in an oven-proof dish. Bake @ 350 for 1:45 - 2 hours. Remove and discard crust. While rice is baking, combine & beat well 4 eggs, 3/4 cup honey, 1 teaspoon salt, 1-2 teaspoons vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg & raisins. Pour egg mixture into baked rice and mix well. Sprinkle top with cinnamon & nutmeg. Return dish to oven and bake for another 20 minutes.

While I miss hanging out with my many wonderful, widely dispersed friends and family today,  I am thankful for them all.

Weather Report

Tonight...Mostly clear. Areas of smoke. Visibility one quarter mile or less at Times. Lows 51 to 61. Winds northeast 15 to 20 mph. Gusts to 40 mph...Becoming 30 mph after midnight.

While it is dark, I'd say I'm in an area of smoke. I was definitely in an area of smoke while it was light out. And it still smells like a bonfire. And my eyes are itchy with the smoke, making it difficult to read. And the fire is 35 miles away.

Monday...Mostly sunny. Warmer. Areas of smoke. Highs 78 to 83 near the coast to 87 to 92 inland. Winds northeast 15 to 20 mph. Gusts to 30 mph...Becoming 40 mph in the afternoon.

Monday Night...Mostly clear. Areas of smoke. Lows 51 to 60. Winds northeast 15 mph in the evening becoming light.

Tuesday...Mostly sunny. Areas of smoke. Highs 82 to 87 near the coast to 90 to 95 inland. Winds east 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph.

*sigh* No rain in sight. Boy am I ready for the PNW.

UPDATE: Mmkay, now I am stuck at work (in a voluntary evacuation area). With 250,000 people under mandatory evaction, I'd never make it home and back in time for the show tonight. Apparently the 5 is a parking lot. I wouldn't mind if I could just find a decent place to nap... :-/

UPDATE2: The hotel has announced we are under a voluntary evacuation. The hotel is considered a "shelter in place" so we are still working. The winds are supposed to be picking up later. Several of the shelters are already full, including Del Mar Fair Grounds. I hope I can get home tonight and back to work in the morning.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO

[info]ziptie!!!!!Chocolate Birthday cake

Stolen from this site devoted to chocolate.

Here is the very simple recipe……….

CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY CAKE

Ingredients

  • 200g Flour
  • 100g Cacao powder
  • 300g sugar
  • 300g butter (unsalted)
  • 5 eggs
  • 20g Baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • milk if necessary for the mix

Using a food processor or mixer combine the sugar and butter together. Mix the flour, cacao powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl. Add 1/3 of this mixture into the processor along with 2 of the eggs. MIX. Then add another 1/3 of the flour mix and a further 2 eggs. MIX. Then add the rest of the flour and eggs. MIX. If the mixture is too stiff add a tiny amount of milk until the consistency seems right. Run processor on High power for 3 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Butter or oil an 8" or 20cm deep cake tin (or two sandwich tins, if you prefer) Pour the cake mixture in and place it in a pre-warmed oven at 180C or gas mark 5 or 360F. All Chocolate cakes take a little longer than normal cakes……..and your oven will be different than mine….. Cook the cake for 40 minutes, then test using a thin stick to see if the centre is cooked. It can be left very moist if you wish…

At trick I use is to switch the oven off while the stick is still showing that the centre is not quite cooked, but leave the cake in the oven for a further 20 minutes. Then remove from the oven, after 5 minutes remove from the cake tin(s) and place on a cooling rack.

To Decorate

  • Strawberries
  • Creme Fraiche (sour cream) or Whipped Double cream if you prefer.
  • Strawberry Jam
  • Cacao powder

If you used the deep tin you now need to carefully slice the cake in two through the middle.

Then spread the creme fraiche on one side of the cake, and strawberry jam on the other. Carefully sandwich together, then decorate the top of the cake with cacao powder shaken through a sieve, and sliced strawberries on top.

Serve……………and ENJOY

Please let me know if you liked this recipe

Dodos

Went to see Flock of Dodos at the Science Center today. While production values were a little lower than my picky standards, not to mention it was shown on not the best projector, which probably hasn't been tweaked since it was installed, it was definitely worth seeing.

If you haven't heard about it, it explores the recent Intelligent Design vs. Evolution debate. Funny and pointed, while it was definitely shot by someone with a scientific background, it didn't present the grass roots supporters of Intelligent Design as villains, and it didn't let the scientists off the hook completely either. Um, I suppose there are some who would call the proponents of Intelligent Design "scientists", but I'm not one of them.

One of the scariest parts is that The Discovery Institute is funding support for those who want to call Intelligent Design a "scientific theory" to the tune of millions. And evidently their goal is to overthrow Materialism.

Don't get me wrong, I think Spirituality is an important part of the Human Experience. I personally don't have a conflict with believing in the existence of something called God and the process of evolution. Heck, even PJP2 accepted Evolution. I just don't think there is anything scientific about Intelligent Design. I'd like to see a hypothesis developed and tested to prove the existence of this intelligent designer we know nothing about.

Books looking for good home

I have a number of woo-woo books looking for a happy new owner. I'm looking to divest of a few of them rather than move them the entire height of the coast.

Titles include: Life on the Other Side & The Other Side and Back by Sylvia Brown, Creating Money: Keys to Abundance by Sanaya Roman & Duane Packer, Unveiled Mysteries (Original) by Godfre Ray King (part of the St.Germain Series), The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren (okay, this is more Evangelical Christian than woo-woo, but hey), Communion with God by Neale Donald Walsch. Thanks, [info]twistedcat!

If you know of anyone who could use any of these, let me know. I'd be happy to pass them along. There are quite a few other woo-woo titles I'd be happy to let go of as well. If you're looking for something specific, let me know and I'll tell you if I have it. Those listed above will be making a trip to the library donations box if there isn't anyone out there who wants them.

Thanks!!!!
